The Multiplier Effect: How One Student Transformed an Entire Organization’s Data Culture

Author: Phakhinda Khanthavilay

Founder and lead trainer of Purple Tulip Development

At Purple Tulip Development, we have a simple philosophy: Training is an output, but impact is the outcome. We often measure success by numbers—how many workshops held, how many certificates issued. But the true evidence of our work lies in the "ripple effect." It’s what happens when a student leaves our classroom and begins to change the world around them.

Recently, we saw this in action through Mr. Chansamuth Vongphone, a professional at the Participatory Development Knowledge Agency (PAKA) and a graduate of our Data Analysis Mastery course (Empowered M&E Series, Batch 2).

Mr. Chansamuth Vongphone was working on the data analysis exercise during the course.

The Problem: Data Without Direction

Before joining us, Chansamuth faced a challenge common to many M&E professionals: data was being collected, but it lacked a clear, professional structure. Analysis felt time-consuming, and the path from raw numbers to high-quality reports was often unclear.

The Solution: The I-C-V-V-I "Secret Formula"

During the intensive two-weekend course in August 2025, Chansamuth mastered what we call our "secret formula" for data excellence: the I-C-V-V-I framework.

This proprietary Purple Tulip tool provides a step-by-step roadmap:

  1. Identify: Pinpoint the exact objectives before touching the data.

  2. Clean: Remove the "noise" to ensure accuracy.

  3. Validate: Double-check logic and consistency.

  4. Visualize: Turn numbers into compelling stories.

  5. Interpret: Extract the "so what?"—the insights that drive decisions.

From Student to Mentor: The Multiplier Effect

What makes Chansamuth’s story remarkable is his Self-Leadership. He didn't just use these tools to make his own life easier (though he did save significant time and improve his data quality). He took his knowledge back to PAKA and trained his organizational partners.

By teaching the I-C-V-V-I principle to project and program managers, he achieved a transformation that one person alone could not do:

  • Organizational Alignment: His entire team now speaks the same "data language."

  • SMARTER Design: M&E processes are now built around actual needs rather than habit.

  • Higher Quality Reporting: Because the analysis is structured, the evidence in their project reports is now more credible and effective.

Chansamuth demonstrated the I-C-V-V-I framework through data visualisation in the data analysis training at his office.

Why We Do What We Do

Chansamuth’s initiative is the perfect embodiment of the proverb: "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime." By empowering Chansamuth, Purple Tulip indirectly empowered PAKA and all its partners. This is how we contribute to a stronger, more evidence-based society in Laos—one leader at a time.

Chansamuth led the data analysis training for the Lao non-profit association, as well as his organisation’s partner organisations.
